#1 – The Vehicle Starts and Runs Well

A history report may claim that a vehicle is in good condition, but the only way to know for sure is to test drive it. Take the vehicle for a test drive to confirm that it starts normally and runs smoothly. During the test drive, pay attention to signs of potential issues, such as:

• The engine sounds rough, whether cruising or idling.
• There are other unusual noises, such as grinding, squeaking, clicking, or scraping.
• The transmission is having trouble shifting or staying in gear.
• The car is driving abnormally, such as sloppy steering or vibrations.
• The exhaust pipe emits smoke or steam.
• The brake pedal feels squishy, or the vehicle has trouble stopping.

#2 – No Heavy Rust or Structural Rust

Tires should also be worn evenly, and the tread depth should be roughly the same on the front and rear. Failing these tests could mean many things, such as missed tire rotations, being set to the wrong air pressure, or misaligned and worn-out suspension parts.

#7 – The Interior Surfaces Are Clean and Neat

Sometimes, a car might be mechanically sound, but the previous owner has let the insides go to waste. The vehicle doesn’t have to necessarily look as good as new, but it should at least be presentable. Confirm that the upholstery, dashboard, floor carpets, and other surfaces have minimal fading and are free of any major stains, scuffs, gouges, or rips. A nice interior indicates that the previous owner cared about the full driving experience, which is a good sign.

#8 – There Are No Dash Warning Lights

The only dashboard lights that you want to come on when you start a used car are the normal “light check” engine sequence as described in the owner’s manual. Temporary lights are okay, such as the headlamp indicators and the low tire pressure light in frigid Albany winter weather. If any other lights remain on—or worse, are blinking—it means the previous owner or the dealership re-selling it has ignored potentially major issues.
