Today, we thought we’d help by reviewing some of our favorite used models you should look for as you search for the right truck to help you get your job done.
Ford F-150
Although the Ford F-Series of full-size trucks was first introduced in 1948, the modern F-150 has been around since 1975, and immediately started making fans. By the early 1980s, the F-150 became the best-selling truck in America and has remained that way ever since. In other words, there are a lot of them around Rensselaer and Albany. This didn’t happen by accident or sheer luck. The F-150 is one of the most powerful and impressive trucks on the road, and it’s been that way for decades. It has continually achieved new heights for the truck market in terms of towing and payload ratings, with powerful engines that you can count on for a long time.
As you look at used Ford F-150s, we suggest one from 2016 or later to get a 13th-generation model, which is a great way to go. In particular, look for one from 2018 or later if you want to enjoy a mid-generation update and the improvements that came along with it. The 14th generation kicked off with the 2021 model year, making these terrific ones to look for if you want a used work truck with some of the latest features and options.
Chevy Silverado 1500
Everyone has their preferences, so if you prefer a Chevy rather than a Ford and you want a terrific full-size pickup, then you need to check out the Chevy Silverado 1500. This one doesn’t go back as far as the F-150, first hitting the road for the 1999 model year, but it builds on the legacy of Chevy trucks that you can easily trace back for a century. The Chevy Silverado 1500 gained immediate popularity with a wide range of drivers and has remained a favorite for folks who need a hard-working truck they can depend on year after year. Powerful engines and bold performance are at the heart of every Silverado, making it the perfect pickup to get you through the week and help you enjoy the weekend.
With a used Chevy Silverado 1500, we’d also suggest one no older than the 2016 model year, which marked a mid-cycle update for the Silverado’s third generation. A fourth-generation Silverado launched for the 2019 model year. You might also look for a Silverado LD if you want a third-generation version from 2019. The Silverado got a refresh and update for the 2022 model year, making it a great one to look for as you consider used options.
Ford Ranger
So far, we’ve been looking at full-size trucks, perfect for helping you get some serious work done, but they’re not the right choice for every driver. If you don’t need something quite that big or with all of that power, then a midsize truck could be the perfect pick for getting you around Rensselaer. First introduced in the 1980s as a compact truck, the Ranger was discontinued after the 2012 model year. However, this wasn’t the end, as Ford’s designers and engineers took it back to the drawing board and released an all-new midsize Ranger for 2019. Since then, this has been a fantastic choice if you need a great truck for work and play, particularly if you don’t need full-size power and engineering.
When looking at used Ford Ranger models, the modern midsize version is the one you’ll want to find, which started with the 2019 model year. Since its initial release, an off-road-focused FX2 package was added for 2020, with minor changes each year after. The Ranger has been redesigned for a new generation with the 2024 model year, so keep that in mind as you look at different used options.

Chevy Colorado
Once again, if you’re not looking for something as big and powerful as the Silverado 1500 but still want a Chevy, the Colorado is a great choice. Like the Ranger, this pickup was introduced as a compact truck for the 2003 model year, discontinued in 2012, and then returned as a midsize truck. This new version of the Colorado hit the road here in the US for the 2015 model year, so you’ll find older ones here than with Ford’s midsize truck. The Colorado is a great pick if you want a work truck that’s great for driving around Rensselaer and enjoying your time off, too.
If you want a Colorado with improved interior features and options, look for a 2017 or newer model. A manual transmission was available until it was discontinued in 2019, and the Colorado received a facelift and update for 2021. A third generation of the Colorado launched for the 2023 model, which is worth remembering if you’re looking for a used truck with the latest features.
Ford Super Duty
If you’re looking for a full-size truck with some serious power and potential loaded into it, then one of the Ford Super Duty pickups is a great choice. The F-250 gives you power beyond what you can get with the standard F-150. The F-350 goes even further and offers dual-rear-wheel configurations that take fifth wheel towing and maximum payload to a new level. These trucks have been around since the 1999 model year, giving you plenty of great ones to look for as you consider used options. This can be a lot more truck than many drivers need, but if you want a serious used work truck ready for anything you can throw at it, they’re a great way to go.
Toyota Tacoma
Now for something completely different. While we love our domestic trucks, they’re not your only options for a used pickup. The Toyota Tacoma is a fantastic truck that can meet a wide range of needs. Generally, it doesn’t have the variety of engine options and configurations available that trucks like the Silverado and F-150 have, so keep that in mind if you’re looking for something specific. Introduced as a compact truck in the 1990s, it became a midsize pickup for the 2004 model year. A used Toyota Tacoma is a terrific choice if you want a truck that’s easy to get around Rensselaer while providing impressive power you can always count on.
