A Legend Reborn: The 2016 Chevy Camaro

2016 Camaro Convertible

Celebrated for its muscle car status in the American pony wars of the 1960s, the Chevy Camaro was translated as a beast that feasts on horses, specifically…mustangs. The Chevy Camaro has long given the Ford Mustang a serious run for its money and with these new performance numbers just released, Ford is going to have to think of a way to beef up the muscle in its Mustangs.

For the 2016 model year, Chevy is bestowing upon the automotive industry and its grateful consumers, the most powerful Camaro yet to burn rubber on the streets of America, or anywhere else for that matter.

Starting With the Basics…

How do you build a car that is faster than its predecessors?

Put it on a diet, for starters. And that’s what Chevy has reportedly done. Each trim level has shed an average of a few hundred pounds. Take their newly svelte structures, and install them with suped up engines, and you can’t help but gain some serious speed. Before we review just how much speed, let’s take a look at some basic Camaro specs, and then move upwards on the trim level, picking up speed and power as we go.

The 2016 Chevy Camaro comes in two body styles: the coupe or convertible available across four trim levels: the 1LT, 2LT, 1SS, and 2SS. As the base trim level, having dropped 390 pounds, the Camaro LTs are outfitted with a brand new engine – the 2.0-liter Turbo engine – able to produce 275 horsepower and sprint from zero to sixty mph in just 5.4 seconds when paired with a manual transmission.

The Power Boost…

But the most powerful Camaro is equipped with a boosted 3.6-liter V6 engine, generating 335 horsepower and 284 lb.-ft. of torque. Keep in mind, this is the most power available from a naturally aspirated V6 engine, in the sports car segment. So equipped, this Camaro takes the zero to sixty mph test in 5.1 seconds, with the quarter mile passed in 13.5 seconds at 103 mph.

Unrivaled Power and Speed…

For the ultimate in power though, you need to check out the new Chevy Camaro SS, flexing serious strength from its refreshed 6.2-liter LT1 V8 engine, roaring with the power of 455 horses and matched by 455 lb.-ft. of torque. This is the engine that will send you flying from zero to sixty mph in just four seconds with the automatic transmission and 4.3 seconds from the manual transmission, thanks in no small measure to the reduced weight by 223 pounds, compared to the 2015 model. Operated by the automatic, the 2016 Chevy Camaro SS zips past the quarter mile mark in 12.3 seconds, traveling at 116 mph. When paired with the manual transmission, the SS gets 12.5 seconds on the quarter mile test, and hits top speeds of 115 mph.

Pausing to revisit the pony wars for a hot minute, these performance numbers prove that the 2016 Chevy Camaro SS out-accelerates the Ford Mustang GT. Maneuvering against windy roads causes the SS to produce up to .97 g on the skidpad. Outfitted with Goodyear’s Eagle F1 summer tires sees the SS stopping from sixty mph in a scant 117 feet. This is power never before seen from the Chevy Camaro crew. Better “giddyup,” Mustangs….Priced to start at the MSRP of $26,995 for the base-level Camaro 1LT, and ranging upwards of $37,000 for the 1SS, we think the power alone is worth this price.

In addition to powerful speed and performance, the word that comes to mind with this year’s crop of Camaros is choice. Between these three engine options and customization possibilities, you can “Find New Roads” in a Chevy Camaro that will exceed your wildest dreams. Just visualize it…

The 2016 Chevy Camaro Visualizer

Chevrolet has created an ingenious online tool to help you design and customize your dream Camaro. The Camaro Visualizer allows you, with the simple click of the mouse, to review exterior and interior color options, accessories, wheel choices, and stripes packages.

Think about what Camaro’s own marketing manager, Todd Christensen, had to say and you’ll understand the purpose of and need for the Camaro Visualizer: “There’s practically no such thing as a factory-stocked Camaro and Chevrolet understands how important customization is to owners…The wide range of personalization options offer customers unprecedented choices for tailoring their Camaro.”

And there is a lot of customization to consider when it comes to the 2016 Chevy Camaro, besides the impressive engine options. First of all, the coupe vs. convertible challenge is a significant choice, especially thanks to the new completely electronic drop top on the convertible, which fully lowers at the touch of a button located on the overhead console or key fob. Even while traveling at up to thirty mph, you can still safely lower the top of the new Camaro convertible, if you suddenly decide that the drive calls for some fresh air.

Just look at the exterior palette, with shades of: Black, Mosaic Black Metallic, Nightfall Gray Metallic, Silver Ice Metallic, Summit White, Bright Yellow, Red Hot, Garnet Red Tintcoat, Blue Velvet Metallic, and the eye-popping new color for 2016: Hyper Blue Metallic. Further customize the color with available body stripes in the form of body side spears, fender hash marks, center stripes, or racing-inspired rally stripes in shades of Black, Gray, Silver, White Pearl, Red, or Blue. Leather or cloth interiors can get some extra embellishment from knee pads available in Red, Black Suede, Kalahari, or White.

Take our advice – start visualizing and exploring your customization options so that when the 2016 Chevy Camaro arrives later this fall at your Chevy dealers in Albany, NY, you’ll be among the first to order up muscle made just for you.
