While all the 2016 models will continue the tradition of excellence in design and technology for which Chevrolet is known, a few models will feature some exciting upgrades.

Here’s what you need to know about what some of these 2016 models have in store:

Redesigned Chevy Volt

2016 Chevy Volt - Albany-NY

The 2016 Chevy Volt will usher in the second generation, and it will include a host of changes that improve its design, performance and more.

The design of the Volt hasn’t changed radically, but it has become a bit sleeker and more sophisticated. You’ll recognize the same Volt, but you’ll see rounder lines in some places and more angles in others. The nose is more sculpted for a more refined look. The rear end is higher and thicker, and the whole car looks more distinctive.

Inside, the Volt has received an updated dash design with more sophisticated dials and knobs. Two eight-inch display screens provide information about the car instead of gauges. Leather upholstery, chrome accents and sweeping lines make the inside look just as nice as the outside. There’s even an extra seat in the back.

The new Volt will get a 1.5-liter direct-injection engine that is lighter and more effective. The new engine will take unleaded fuel (not just premium). It will also put out 101 horsepower but use fewer RPMs, which will make for a quieter ride and less fuel consumption. Combined with electrical power, the car will get 149 horsepower.

The battery will provide more power while also dropping some weight to contribute to fuel efficiency. Overall, the new Volt is expected to get 41 mpg when driving on gas and 102 mpg when driving on electricity.

Other updates include safety features like lane assist, rear cross traffic alert and forward safety awareness.

Multiple colors and trims are available to make the Volt a reflection of your own style.

Leaner, Meaner Camaro

The Camaro has always been known for its strength and speed. The 2016 model will build on that tradition, helping the Camaro to become even faster and more agile.

The secret to its success? The 2016 Camaro has been on a diet. It will weigh at least 200 pounds lighter than the outgoing model thanks to its new Alpha chassis.

The Alpha chassis is similar to what was used on the Cadillac ATC coupe, but the Camaro will be much larger (both in length and width). Many of the new Camaro’s parts will be made in whole or in part from aluminum, including the dashboard and the front and rear suspension. The use of aluminum and a rigid composite material are directly responsible for the Camaro’s new lighter weight.

With these changes, the 2016 Camaro will now be in the same weight class as the 2015 Ford Mustang. Dropping the weight isn’t just for vanity. The new, lighter weight will improve the Camaro’s fuel efficiency, handling, braking, and acceleration, making it a more fierce competitor in the segment.

The exact weight of the 2016 Camaro is not yet known, but based on the weight of the 2015 model, industry insiders speculate it could weigh in between 3,519 pounds and 3,708 pounds. We should learn more in the coming weeks.

A Safer Chevy Equinox

2016 Equinox Upgrades

SUVs like the Chevy Equinox are popular among families, making their safety a top priority. The 2016 Chevrolet Equinox has been designed with safety in mind, and several new features have been added.

Preventive safety features like blind-spot monitoring have been added to the 2016 Equinox. In-vehicle alert systems will let you know if someone is hanging out in your blind spot while you are trying to change lanes or if someone is coming while you are trying to back out of your driveway or a parking space. A forward-collision alert system also lets you know if you are getting too close to something in front of you, increasing your risk for an accident.

Six air bags now provide protection in case of an accident, and there is also a safety cage for rollover protection. The Lower Anchors and Top Tethers for Children system is also present for child safety seats, as is standard.

In case you are in an accident, the vehicle’s OnStar system is designed to automatically connect you with an operator to see if you are OK or are in need of emergency assistance. If you are unable to respond, emergency responders will be dispatched to your location.

While the 2016 Equinox has received a number of other design and technology updates, we are most impressed with these safety features, which we are sure families will love.

Malibu Gets Volt’s Hybrid Technology

Chevy doesn’t have to put all its hybrid eggs in one basket. The technology that has made the Volt so successful will now help to power the Chevy Malibu, giving it improved fuel efficiency.

The 2016 Chevy Malibu will have a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors. The battery will be an 80-cell 1.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. With the electric and gas power, the Malibu will be able to get 182 horsepower.

The battery can power the Malibu up to 55 mph on its own. Gas power will automatically kick in when the battery has been depleted.

The new Chevy Malibu is expected to get fuel efficiency of 48 mpg in the city or 45 mpg on the highway. It has a combined fuel efficiency of 47 mpg. That’s lower than what the Volt gets, but the vehicle is also larger and the battery is smaller. The Malibu is also not a plug-in hybrid, which lowers its fuel efficiency.

We’re hoping that making this hybrid option available for the 2016 Chevy Malibu means that Chevy is starting to look at hybrid or alternative fuel options for all its vehicles in the long term. As the technology becomes more popular, we can see it spreading to become the standard feature on all vehicles, not just Chevys.

As automotive technology and design are advancing, 2016 is shaping up to be a great year for the automotive industry.

Chevrolet has some exciting changes in store, and these are just a few of them. As more details are released about the full 2016 lineup in the coming months, we’re sure that we’ll learn about even more exciting changes on the horizon.
