Top 10 Facts About the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro

April 20th, 2015 by

In just a few short weeks, we’ll all get to finally see the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro, the sixth generation of one of Chevy’s most popular models. The Camaro has been delivering exceptional performance and style for decades now, and we can’t wait to see what the newest iteration has in store for us.

As one of the top Albany Chevrolet dealerships, DePaula Chevrolet will have the new Camaro on our lot as soon as it becomes available.

Though we don’t know much about what the new Camaro will look like (it’s been shrouded in camo wraps in all the teaser shots), we do know a few things about the newest Camaro that have us pretty excited. Here are the top 10 facts we’ve rounded up about the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro:

1. It Will Have a New Engine Option

The Camaro has always been known for power and performance, and the 2016 model is expected to only improve upon that reputation. The base model may stick with the traditional naturally-aspirated V6, but may also get upgraded to come with a new 3.6-liter turbocharged V6 engine that puts out 355 horsepower and 287 pounds per feet of torque.  (That’s the same engine used in the Cadillac CT6, CTS and ATS.)

Those who want a little more power can opt for the Camaro SS, which will have a 6.2-liter V8 engine that puts out 450 horsepower.

2. It’s Going On a Diet

The trend in the automotive industry has been to lighten the load on its vehicles to improve handling and fuel efficiency, and the new Camaro will be a part of that movement. The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro is expected to weigh 200 pounds less thanks to its smaller overall size and the use of aluminum for the suspension and other key components.

With a lighter weight, the Camaro will perform better and react more quickly on the road. That should also translate into improve aerodynamics and fuel efficiency.

3. Built on the New Alpha Platform

Adding to the improved performance of the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro is the new platform upon which it will be built. The Camaro will have the Alpha platform, which is also used in the Cadillac ATS and CTS. It is a rear-wheel drive platform that has a respectable reputation for performance.

Industry insiders believe that the Alpha platform will make the new Camaro more competitive with the 2015 Ford Mustang.

4. It Will Have an Enhanced Dual-Mode Exhaust System

Sometimes, you don’t just want to be fast — you also want your car to roar down the road, turning heads as you go. the dual-mode exhaust system on the new Camaro will allow you to do just that. The system has electronically actuated exhaust valves that open during hard acceleration. Not only does this improve performance, but it also makes a louder sound more befitting of a race car.

If you want, you can change the controls so that you have a quieter ride — you know, like when you’re pulling into the office on a Monday morning. Otherwise, you can keep the valves open and let the roar of the engine make you feel like you are on a race track.

5. The SS Will Have Magnetic Ride Control

In the past, the MagneRide technology was only available on the high-performance ZL1 version of the Camaro. Now it comes standard on the SS, and it will be available on the Corvette, Cadillac CTS-V and Chevrolet SS.

MagneRide uses magnetically controlled shock absorbers instead of a traditional suspension system. Not only does this result in smoother performance, but it also eliminates valves and other small parts that can wear out over time. You’ll save money and spend less time in the repair shop.

6. It Will Have Four Drive Modes

Not everyone wants to put the pedal to the metal every time they get behind the wheel. The new Camaro will cater to all your moods with four drive modes. You can choose from Tour, Sport, Track and Snow/Ice.

When you choose one of these options, the car automatically adjusts the steering, throttle mapping, traction control, and stability control. Therefore, whether you are trying to drive through ice on your way to work or you want to drive over dirt roads on your way to a camping trip on the weekend, the Camaro will adapt to get you there quickly and safely.

7. It Will Have Evolutionary Style Changes

Though we don’t yet know anything about how the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro will look, we do know that there won’t be any radical changes. Company officials have said to expect evolutionary changes that make small improvements over the previous design. Since the 2015 Chevrolet Camaro looked pretty amazing, we certainly aren’t complaining that there won’t be a redesign.

8. It Will Get a Performance Data Recorder System

The new Camaro is slated to get the same performance data recorder system that has been used in the C7 Corvette Stingray and the V-series by Cadillac. This system lets you record data from your time around the track, such as how fast you were going, your RPMs, G-readings and more.

If the exceptional performance and speed of the Camaro didn’t already make you feel like a race car driver, seeing those numbers pop up on the performance data recorder system will.

9. It Will Have 4G LTE Wireless Capability

You don’t have to find a wireless hotspot when you need to check your email or post a photo of yourself in your flashy new car to Facebook. Instead, your new Camaro will be the hotspot. The 2016 Camaro will have 4G LTE wireless capability to connect all your mobile devices.

10. It Will Have Brembo Brakes

The 2015 Camaro had Brembo brakes, and so will the 2016 model. These high-performance brakes are designed specifically for fast stops even during high speeds. With the lighter weight of the new Camaro, the brakes should have to work less, improving their power and extending their life span.

Official photos and additional details for the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro will be released on May 16. Until then, we’ll be searching out whatever information we can find and hoping for a few spy shots that don’t include the camo wrap. Whatever we find out, we’ll share with you here.
